Central Manitoulin Municipal Election

The 2026 Municipal Election is your opportunity to help shape the future of the Municipality of Central Manitoulin. Eligible voters will elect the Mayor, members of Council, and School Board Trustees who will represent our community and make important local decisions over the next four years.  

Information for Voters on the 2026 Election

The next Municipal Election will take place Monday, October 26, 2026.

A person is entitled to vote in a municipal election if they are a qualified elector. That means, on
Voting Day, they must be:

  • a resident of the Municipality of Central Manitoulin, or an owner or tenant of land, or the
    spouse or same sex partner of such an owner or tenant;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • at least 18 years old; and
  • not prohibited from voting by law.

An owner or tenant of non-residential property, or their spouse, is not eligible to vote for a School
Board Trustee.

A person is not entitled to vote if they are:

  • a person serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution;
  • a corporation;
  • a person acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity; and/or
  • a person convicted of a corrupt practice for an election held within four years of Voting
    Day.

 

Eligible and registered electors will receive a ballot package and information letter by mail.

  1. Fill out your ballot.
  2. Place your completed ballot into the Secrecy Envelope and seal it.
  3. Sign the Declaration Form.
  4. Place both the signed Declaration Form and sealed Secrecy Envelope into the provided pre-addressed/postage-paid return envelope.
  5. Return your completed ballot package by mail or in person.

Advance voting will take place from October 1 to October 23, 2026.

Ballots may be returned using the provided pre-addressed/postage-paid return envelope.

In Person at the Municipal Office
Completed ballot packages may be dropped off at the Municipal Office during regular office hours:
Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m

Voting Day - October 26, 2026
On Election Day, voters may also bring their completed ballot package to the designated voting area located in the Central Manitoulin Municipal Council Chambers at 6020 542-ON, Mindemoya on:

Information for Candidates

This section provides key information for individuals considering or running for municipal office. It includes guidance on the nomination process, important deadlines, filing requirements, and other resources to support candidates throughout the election period. Please review all materials carefully to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and procedures.

Eligibility:

You are eligible to run for municipal office if, on the day you submit your nomination, you meet all of the following conditions:

  • You live in the municipality, or you own, rent property or are the spouse of someone who does
  • You are a Canadian citizen
  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You are not otherwise disqualified from holding municipal office under any law

Nomination Period:

  • Nominations Open: Friday, May 1st, 2026
  • Nominations Close (Nomination Day): Friday, August 21st, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
  • Withdrawal Deadline: Candidates may withdraw their nomination up until 2:00 p.m. on Nomination Day (Friday, August 21st, 2026)

Please note: 

  • No election-related spending may occur until an individual has filed their nomination papers

  • Candidates who intend to incur expenses or receive funds for their campaign must open a dedicated bank account for that purpose.
  • After certification, candidate names will be posted on our website.

Filing Fees:

  • Candidates must pay a filing fee when they submit their nomination papers. These fees must be paid at the time of filing - by cash, debit, or certified cheque.
  • The filing fee for a candidate running for Mayor is $200.
  • The filing fee for a candidate running for any other office or School Board Trustee is $100.
All the required forms and information can be found in our 2026 Candidate Package and are available for pick up at the Central Mantioulin Municipal Office during regular office hours of Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Electronic copies of the Candidate Package are also available by contacting the CAO/Clerk Denise Deforge at ddeforge@centralmanitoulin.ca to request a copy. 

Once the Candidate Package is completed, scheduling an appointment in advance to submit nomination materials is highly recommended to ensure staff availability.
