  • State of Emergency Update as of April 23rd, 2026
    Over the past couple of weeks, our community has faced some incredibly challenging conditions. Through it all, residents, businesses, and volunteers came together in a way that truly reflects the strength and resilience of Central Manitoulin. The support, cooperation, and care shown for one another has not gone unnoticed.
    At this time:
    • All municipal roadways are open. However, some areas will continue to be monitored regularly by our Roads Department to ensure conditions remain safe.
    • The Ministry of Natural Resources will continue to monitor the Big Lake Dam and will advise the Municipality if any further operation of the Dam is required.
    • Municipal programming and facility rentals will resume as of Saturday, April 25th, 2026.
    • The Drinking Water Advisory has been lifted for the Town of Mindemoya as of Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026.
    With that being said, the State of Emergency remains in effect.
    While conditions may seem to have improved, we ask all residents and businesses to remain prepared should circumstances change.
    We are incredibly proud of how our community has responded - working together, supporting one another, and rising to meet these challenges head-on. Thank you to everyone who played a role in helping keep our community safe.

  • Drinking Water Advisory Lifted for the Town of Mindemoya
    Public Health Sudbury & Districts has officially lifted the Drinking Water Advisory that came into effect Sunday, April 12th, 2026, for all residents of the Town of Mindemoya who get their water from the Mindemoya Water Treatment System.
    Please note that with the advisory lifted and water service restored, the Municipal Office will now return to regular operating hours (Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm).
    What to do after a Drinking Water Advisory is lifted and before using the water:
    • Run cold water faucets or fountains for 5 minutes or until the water runs clear.
    • Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.
    • Drain and refill hot water heaters.
    • Large-volume users may need to run cold water taps longer on first use.
    • To get rid of sediment, faucet screens should be removed, rinsed and put back in.

  • Free Tipping Available for Flood Damaged Items
    In order to assist residents affected by flood damage, the Municipality will be instituting a process by which residents may dispose of items damaged by the recent flooding.
    There are 2 different processes to follow, depending on the type of damage:
    1. Building Materials – this consists of drywall, insulation, flooring, carpet etc. which will be removed due to flood damage.
    2. General Contents – this consists of non-building materials such as beds, couches, clothes and other similar type items that were destroyed due to flood damage.
    Building Materials:
    An Alteration Repair Permit Application for flood remediation is available online at https://www.centralmanitoulin.ca/our.../permits-and-forms/ or at the Municipal Office. Please fill out this form and submit it to the Municipal Office along with multiple pictures showing the water damage and proof that your insurance company has denied your claim. Submissions can be submitted either by paper or by sending an email to admin@centralmanitoulin.ca.
    Once we have received your paperwork, the Chief Building Official will conduct a site visit. Upon approval of the claim, the Chief Building Official will issue an Alteration Repair Permit at no cost. The front staff at the Municipal Office will issue you a card, which will be accepted at the Providence Bay Landfill site only.
    This card will entitle you to dump Building Materials only for a period of 30 days from the issuance of the Permit.
    General Contents: 
    To access this program, please visit the Municipal Office. We will require multiple pictures showing the water damage and the items that are being disposed of. Submissions can be submitted either by paper or by sending an email to admin@centralmanitoulin.ca. Municipal Staff will assess your pictures and determine how many trips to the landfill site will be required. The front staff at the Municipal Office will issue you the necessary number of cards, which will be accepted at the Providence Bay Landfill site only.
    Important Reminders:
    • Please do NOT bring flood-damaged items to the transfer station before obtaining your card.
    • Visit the office starting Monday, April 20th, 2026, to get your card before heading to the transfer station.
    • This is only valid at the Providence Bay Transfer Station, and operating hours will remain the same (Thursday and Saturday from 1 pm - 5 pm).
    • A separate bin will be clearly designated at the transfer station for these materials.

  • Road Repair Underway Across Municipality
    Construction and road repair work is underway in several locations across the municipality.
    We appreciate everyone’s patience during this time and ask that drivers use extra caution when travelling through construction zones. Please slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and be mindful of changing road conditions.

  • MNR Delays Log Removal at Big Lake Dam
    The Municipality has been advised that the Ministry of Natural Resources has delayed the removal of the half-log at the Big Lake Dam.
    They will be continually reassessing the situation.
    We ask the public to remain prepared as conditions may change. We will continue to share updates as soon as more information becomes available.

  • Weather Advisory Issued for Potential Freezing Temperatures and High Winds
    Environment Canada has advised the Municipality that freezing temperatures and strong wind gusts are expected over the weekend. These conditions may increase the risk of power outages across our community.
    Residents are encouraged to take time now to prepare, including:
    • Ensuring backup power sources are ready
    • Checking sump pumps and drainage systems
    • Having emergency supplies on hand
    This is especially important for those currently relying on sump pumps due to ongoing flooding conditions.
    Taking a few precautions now can help reduce potential impacts if outages occur.

  • Increased Flood Risk for the Town of Mindemoya

    The Municipality is advising that there is a high possibility of further flooding in the Town of Mindemoya.

    The Municipality has been advised by the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre that approximately 20mm of rain is expected by tomorrow morning. The Municipality has also been advised by the Ministry of Natural Resources that they will be removing ½ a log from the Big Lake Dam tomorrow.

    Areas impacted will include:

    • Hwy 542 (from Elliot Road to Hwy 551)
    • Hwy 551 (from Hwy 542 to Hare’s Creek)
    • Thorne Street (from Forest Street to Yonge Street)
    • Forest Street (from Thorne Street to Hwy 542)

    The combination of these events may result in significant flooding within the town tomorrow, and overnight to Sunday morning.

  • Road Closure Notice: Update April 16th, 2026
    Due to significant flooding caused by rapid snowmelt and heavy rainfall, some roads within the Municipality of Central Manitoulin are currently closed to ensure public safety.
    The following roads are closed until further notice:
    • Blue Road (from Cress Road to Yonge Street)
    • Forest Street 
    Barricades have been placed at affected areas. Please do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways as water levels and road conditions can change quickly and may pose serious risks.
    Municipal crews are actively monitoring conditions and will reopen roads as soon as it is safe to do so.
