New Trial Thursday Landfill Hours Starting August 27th

Thursday, August 20, 2020

There will be a trial run of Thursday landfill hours at both Big Lake and Providence Bay from Thursday, August 27th, 2020 to Thursday, October 22nd, 2020. Please see the attached poster for details and hours. Note that the hours will change with traditional summer season end of Labour Day weekend. Although this year we may see a very busy shoulder season beyond Labour Day based on current travel patterns of tourists and seasonal residents. Having this in place for the end of the summer and into that shoulder season will assist us in navigating the surge in visitors.

The aim of the extra mid-week landfill hours is to address increased instances of illegal dumping and litter in our Municipality.  Dumpsters placed around the Municipality was discussed at length, however it was decided that ultimately the disposals would have to be monitored as with past experiences we know that people will take advantage of or not use dumpsters responsibly. The only current solution to monitoring was opening the landfills for a midweek disposal time.  It may not stop all of the dumping but will certainly relieve some of the dumping that takes place by people who aren’t able to dispose of garbage within the current disposal or pickup times.

We also hope this midweek trial assists local businesses that may have a high volume of disposals outside of weekly pickup and the sometimes-hectic weekend schedules.  As always, thank you for your patience and support as the Municipality navigates our current situation along with you.

Please see the attached 8.5x11 poster for details and feel free to advertise the Thursday landfill trial period.
