EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

 

“With deep roots, the sky is our only limit.”

 

The Central Manitoulin Strategic Plan began with staff and council developing a Community Vision, Mission, Principles and Values.  Local businesses and services, along with staff and council, were consulted regarding the municipality’s strengths and weaknesses.  Strategic priorities for achieving the vision and mission were created and prioritized.  Five common themes or areas resulted and a key goal for each was identified.  They included:

 

1.      Economic Growth and Development

Goal: To work with key partners and stakeholders to develop economic opportunities in the Municipality of Central Manitoulin.

 

2.      Tourism

Goal: To develop and market tourism opportunities within the Municipality of Central      Manitoulin.

 

3.      Community Image and Identity

Goal: To revitalize the downtown area of Mindemoya as a pedestrian-friendly and inviting environment for locals and visitors.

 

4.      Recreation and Leisure

Goal: To ensure that a range of recreation and leisure activities that meet our citizens needs.

 

5.      Agriculture

Goal:  To support initiatives in the local agricultural industry.

 

Related to each of the above-mentioned goals, descriptions and key initiatives are provided in the main document.  Supporting these descriptions is a number of “action statements” or objectives that begin to provide the direction the Strategic Plan should take.  Overall, there are 13 areas that are identified and described.  They include:

 

   1.    Employment opportunities

2.      Accessible and affordable housing opportunities

3.      Education and Communication opportunities between businesses and municipality

4.      Providence Bay Beach Area

5.      Rehabilitation of the Mindemoya River

6.      Harbour View Interpretive Centre

7.      Signage

8.      Downtown Beautification - Mindemoya

9.      Pedestrian-friendly downtown area.

10.  Welcome Centre

11.  Walking Trails

12.  Family-Friendly Activities

13.  Local agricultural project
